How to Name Your Bulldog Puppy or Dog

Over the course of its life, you'll end up using your dog's name over 35,000 times. Consider these simple steps when choosing just the right puppy name. Do you really want to be calling out "Foofers" for the next decade?

Choose names with two or three syllables ending in a vowel sound. This helps the dog differentiate its name from commands, which are usually one syllable words, and general chatter, which consists of a long string of sounds.

Avoid creating any confusion with commands you give your dog (for example, "Stay" and "Stacy").

Remember that you’ll be using your dog’s name in public. "Butthead" may be cute among your fellow bowling buddies, but it won’t go over well at the vet or dog park. Also, choosing a name that's too common will mean your dog might run to someone else (or you might get someone else's dog jumping on you).

Make your kids part of the decision process. Kids, like dogs, prefer simple puppy names, too. If naming your Champion Cavalier King Spaniel "Peanut" works for them, consider keeping your favorite hoity toity name strictly for AKC purposes.

Ask before using a family member or friend's name. You may think it’s an honor to name your pup after your favorite Aunt Matilda, but she may not take it as a compliment.

Be careful when changing an older dog's name. Stick with similar sounds, such as changing "Barney" to "Farley." It's more important to keep the vowel sounds the same than the consonants, since vowels are easier for the dog to pick up on and what the dog is actually listening for. So "Pikey" will accept "Mikey" but not "Picky" or "Pokey."

Do a test run. Once you’ve chosen a name, try it out for a day or so. You’ll know right away whether it’s a keeper.

Give your puppy lots of hugs and positive reinforcement (treats) when s/he responds to the name. S/he will quickly learn what his or her name is.

Tips

At first glance, a few things will stand out about your new puppy. These components may aid you in naming him or her:

Appearance. What’s your dog look like? His color, size, and personal style inspires a variety of name choices. "Stubbs" would be a great name for a dachshund pup. Or you may call a cream colored cock-a-poo "Buffy".

Personality. Given a couple of days, your new dog’s personality will really shine through. Try “Cuddles" for the sweet little guy who loves to get cozy or “Puddles" for the pooch who can’t seem to find the doggie door.

If you want to go beyond the basics, many famous dog names or foreign dog names can fit the bill. Consider these favorite puppy names when making your decision.

Celebrity dog names. Today, pooches have more celebrity following than their famous owners. Try "Denver" or "Delilah," dogs to star Charlize Theron.

TV dogs. “Dino" and “Astro" come to mind if you want to honor a famous TV pup.

Movie dogs. Cool movies and cool dog names seem to go hand in hand. Cool Hand Luke’s “Blue" would be a fitting label for a variety of dogs. And don't forget Disney's famous "101 Dalmatians."

Comic dogs. “Snoopy" will always be a favorite, but also consider “Daisy" or “Puddles."

German dog names. For starters, try out “Fritz" or “Kaiser."

Irish dog names. Love water? Then try “Murphy," which just happens to mean “hound of the sea."

French dog names. “Pierre" and “Coco" are top contenders for any dog, especially those with a little oo-la-la in their genes.

Other ideas to consider: names from your favorite city or country, religious dog names, or names from great books.

• German dog names. For starters, try “Elsa? or “Luger.?

• Family and friend dog names.

• Sports teams and player names.

• Names can be found anywhere: In your favorite book, a part of your favorite hobby, etc.

Once you’ve chosen a new name, try it out for a day or so. See if it grows on you. You’ll know really soon whether it’s a keeper or not. If not, try something else. There are always many more puppy names to explore and try out. Very important, don't forget to reward your puppy or dog when they respond to their new name. The more treats, love and hugs they receive now, the sooner they'll come running when you call later.

Warnings

When naming two dogs, make sure that if the number of syllables between the two dogs is the same, make sure the vowel sounds are different, or that the voicing of consonants is different (Ex. k/g, p/b, t/d)

Do not make the dog's name similiar to a command or a commonly used word. For example, do not name your dog "Nova" if you are using the word "no" to punish bad behaviors.
